Chapter Fourteen

Iwas still trying to process Vince’s news about Fred’s call to Carol when a familiar jingling announced Faye’s arrival on my porch. The sound of her bracelets preceded her knock at the door, like wind chimes warning of an approaching storm.

Standing from the chair, I shot Vince a look, hoping he wouldn’t mind the intrusion in the middle of our conversation. Faye breezed in as soon as I opened the door.

“The energies this morning are absolutely chaotic,” she declared, sweeping through in a swirl of purple and green silk. “I could feel them all the way from my meditation room,” she said as she stepped inside, cradling a small potted rosemary plant.

“This little one wants to join your garden,” she said, setting the plant on my kitchen counter. “Though from the looks of things outside, you’ve already started without my help.”

Shortcake jumped down from the window to greet her, winding around her ankles as she made her way to into the living room with the confidence of someone who had appointed herself my spiritual advisor.

I took the pot of rosemary from her, the fragrance washing over me and calming me a bit. “Thank you. This will be lovely. I’ll plant it right away.”

“I saw Lois pull away a few minutes ago,” she said. “Thought it was strange to see her out and about during work hours.”

“Yeah,” I said with a sigh. “Someone else was killed.”

“Oh, my.” She sank down into the seat I’d just abandoned. “Do we know who it was?”

Vince, still standing by my living room window, raised an eyebrow at me. I could tell he was trying to gauge how much we should share.

“We do,” I said carefully. “You remember the murder at the environmental council offices last week?”

Faye nodded, her usual dreamy expression sharpening into something more focused. “Terrible business. I didn’t know him personally, but still...”

“I’m working for his widow,” Vince said, sinking into one of my kitchen chairs. “And now his boss was just found dead too.”

“Fred Buchanan? The one who was running that development group? The one Lois was working with, yes? Oh, that’s why she was here...”

I shouldn’t have been surprised she was so well-informed. Faye had an uncanny way of collecting information that would make the CIA jealous.

“Everything seems to lead back to the environmental council somehow,” I said as I sat down on the couch, absently stroking Shortcake as he settled into my lap. “But we can’t figure out exactly what the connection is.”

“Something about those offices,” Vince added. “Both victims had some tie to what was happening there. From what Carol tells me, those offices are only accessible to the people on the board.”

Faye’s fingers traced patterns on the arm of the chair as she thought. “The board has been particularly... intense lately. More closed-door meetings than usual. More in-fighting, from what I gather.”

I straightened suddenly. “Wait, Faye—you’re part of that group, aren’t you? You mentioned their gala the other day.”

Her eyes lit up. “Oh! Yes, I am! Not on the board, but I attend all the meetings.
